About Divakar Karanth

Dr. Divakar Karanth is a Program Director of the Orthodontic Residency Program and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Orthodontics. He is a director of the Predoc Orthodontic program. He is an American Board of Orthodontics Board Certified Orthodontist. Dr. Karanth completed his MS and Certificate in Orthodontics at the University of Kentucky. He is an elite member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Karanth is a Secretary and Treasurer of the Society of Educators of the American Association of Orthodontists. His research interests are in bone regeneration, the biology of tooth movement, and artificial intelligence. Dr. Karanth has published several articles related to orthodontics and serves as a reviewer for various journals. Dr. Karanth is involved in teaching orthodontic residents, pediatric dentistry residents, and Predoc students. He also runs a very successful orthodontic practice at UF Faculty Clinic.

Research Profile

Developing and evaluating the piezoelectric scaffold for alveolar bone regeneration. This research was funded by an NIH pilot study grant. We developed and analyzed a biodegradable scaffold using poly L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible and electroactive polymer that could be used for bone regeneration. The 3D printed PLLA scaffold showed promising properties akin to the natural bone, and it is worth investigating further for bone regeneration.
