Research Profile

Dr Valdes-Hernandez’s field of expertise is Neuroimaging. He specializes in Medical Image Analysis, Biostatistics, Computational Neuroanatomy, Computational Neurosciences and the principles of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. His work has been focused on 1) the analysis of large multimodal neuroimaging databases [e.g., MRI, (anatomical, functional, diffusion), and brain electrical topographies and tomographies based on EEG and MEG], 2) the theoretical modeling of brain activity and signal/image formation, and 3) experimental testing of several biophysical theories of the brain. Over his career, He has used a great amount of programming (e.g., MATLAB) to apply several statistical methods (e.g., multivariate regression, machine learning algorithms, signal processing, and inference of state-space models) to extract information from multimodal brain images and infer neurobiological processes. He has also performed EEG/fMRI experimentation in both humans and rats. Moreover, with a mindset on the betterment of health and quality of life of society, he has dealt with a variety of different normal and pathological populations covering a wide range of ages (e.g., he has studied children with Epilepsy and older adults with and without chronic pain).
