Teaching Philosophy

I have a tremendous amount of gratitude for the teachers and mentors who enabled me to be successful in medicine. The primary reason I elected to stay in academia, rather than private practice, was to “pay it forward,” which I do by elevating other students, trainees and junior faculty.

Clinical Profile

I am a board-certified Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist with subspecialty fellowship training and board certification in Hematopathology. As a hematopathologist my primary clinical role is to render diagnoses on tissue samples from patients with known or suspected lymphoma or leukemia. I evaluate specimens by examining slides under the microscope in addition to flow cytometric analysis of cell characteristics, immunohistochemical studies and special stains. I also correlate these findings with cytogenetic, FISH and molecular testing data performed in our other clinical labs. Specimens on which I render a diagnosis include blood, bone marrow aspirate/biopsy, mass biopsy/FNA, CSF, and fluid/effusions. Our patients are typically medically complex, undergoing multi-agent chemotherapy with multiple co-morbidities including bone marrow transplant. My diagnoses support the work of our pediatric and adult bone marrow transplant services, the latter being one of sixteen centers in the NHLBI/NCI Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network.
