Elective Courses

Electives are courses designed to allow dental students the opportunity to vary their curriculum according to individual interests. Electives are intended to supplement, not to replace any part of, the core curriculum.

Requirements

Each student is required to complete a minimum of 60 clock hours (6 credit hours) of approved elective courses. The elective course requirement is 6 credit hours of course work prior to graduation.

The range of credit for any approved elective is from 1.0 to 3.0 credit hours, 1 didactic credit hour (12-15 hours) and 1 preclinical or clinical hour (30 hours).

Student Registration for UFCD Electives

To enroll, for student cap. elective courses, contact the course director and use the Elective Interest Request Form (pdf).

For electives without a student cap, students must complete the Elective Enrollment Request (pdf) and obtain the course director’s signature.

The director or student then forwards the request form to the Office of Education to ensure proper student registration.

For externship electives, complete the Extern Evaluation Form (pdf) to make certain the proper timeframe and requirements can be met prior to enrolling in these electives.

The goal of this research elective is to provide the student with a short term faculty mentored research experience. Complete the elective enrollment request form. Contact the department chair to confirm your faculty mentor, project, timeline.

UFCD Research Track Electives

The Research Track is intended for students who are committed to obtaining a concentrated research experience during dental school. Most of the students in this program have an interest in an academic career.

Faculty Registration for Creating New Electives

Individually arranged or newly proposed electives: If a faculty member wishes to offer a new elective or a student desires an elective not currently available, the student should go to the faculty who will supervise the elective and serve as the Elective Course Director. After discussion, the Elective Course Director and the student should decide on the elective title, beginning date, anticipated completion date, and the total hours required to complete the elective. The Elective Course Director should then complete an application form and forward it to the Curriculum Committee for approval. If the application is approved, it will be forwarded to the Curriculum Committee for further discussion and official approval of the elective as planned. The Elective course director and student(s) will be notified of the Committee’s final action.

Requirements and Registration for Continuing Education Units (CEU)

The Continuing Education requirement for graduation are 16 CEUs (6 in junior year and 10 in senior year). Class assignments (i.e. Spring Synergy and Professionalism Day) will not apply to CEUs.

For the Class of 2022 – Due to COVID-19 accumulated CE hours will be rolled over from 3DN year to 4DN year so students can work ahead to achieve 16 CEU’s by Spring 2022.

To register for continuing dental education courses, students may choose from a range of approved local, state, national and academic university providers. UFCD Continuing Education courses are at no charge to students but you must enroll and receive a certificate of attendance. Contact the UFCD Continuing Education Office if you have any questions. Students who wish to take other continuing education courses will do so at their own expense. You must turn in a copy of your certificate or an image of course completion to the Office of Education and a course evaluation identified as a DMD student to the Office of Academic Affairs to verify you have met the hour CEU requirement for the junior and senior year CEU requirement. CEUs in excess of the 6 hours required in the junior year cannot be used to satisfy the requirements of the senior year. Due to COVID-19 the prior statement does not apply to the Class of 2022.

Students interested in registering for a CE course that conflicts with scheduled classes, clinics, rotations or other mandated College activities and events must complete a Planned Student Leave of Absence form on the Teaching Resources and Forms web page. This form requires the signature of your course directors and TEAM Leader. Students should not request and will not be granted a leave of absence to attend any CE course that interferes with a scheduled course examination or a mandated laboratory. For further information on the student leave policy, consult the UFCD Student Handbook on the Forms and Publications web page.

With administrative planning needed to accommodate rooms and materials you must attend any course for which you register. The CE Office requires at least a two day notice for cancellation of a course registration. If you fail to attend a CE course for which you have registered and have not cancelled two days in advance, you will be prevented from attending any future free CE courses sponsored by our office. Additionally, a professional variance form will be completed and submitted to the Office of Clinical Administration related to this issue.
