Research Interests

Dr. Mauderli’s research focus is on neural pain modulation mechanisms. When activated, these mechanisms lead to changes in pain sensitivity. Thus, they determine how pain-prone a subject is. He has been involved in studies of pain sensitivity in the rodent model and in human subjects.

For the rodent model, Dr. Mauderli has been the primary inventor of a new operant escape assay for which a patent application has been filed. The assay is highly sensitive to opioid analgesia, and it is currently being used in laboratories of the Comprehensive Center for Pain Research and the Dept. of Neuroscience to study the effects of CNS injury on thermal nociception.

Dr. Mauderli’s current research focus is the study of exaggerated pain sensitization and deficient pain inhibition resulting from CNS injury and from chronic pain syndromes in human participants (e.g., fibromyalgia, irritable bowel and myofascial pain).

In his research efforts, he is collaborating with other members of the McKnight Brain Institute. Dr. Mauderli’s laboratory has attracted a number of student scholars and an IDP Ph.D. student of neuroscience.
