Committee Composition
The Associate Dean for Admissions will serve as a member and permanent Chair of the committee. There is no Vice Chair. The committee will consist of twelve full-time faculty members elected by the Faculty Assembly for three-year terms. Additional members identified by the Dean for three-year terms will be: two members-at-large, three private practitioners, one member from an alumni group, and one member from the basic science departments. Nine dental students will also serve on the committee. Members of this committee may be re-elected or re-appointed for one additional three-year term. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Involvement, the Assistant Director of Admissions, and the DMD-PhD Coordinator will serve as ex officio members. The Academic Program Specialist, Admissions Officers, and Student Financial Aid Coordinator will serve as non-voting, ex officio members. All committee recommendations are presented directly to the Dean.
Standing Committee Charge
The responsibilities of this committee are to recruit, select, and recommend to the Dean the most outstanding group of student applicants for admission to the DMD program of the College of Dentistry. The committee may seek consultation with relevant individuals, committees, or departments within the College, but will have the final responsibility for establishing all selection criteria for admission.
Committee Mission Statement
To assure high quality and increased access to oral health care in the United States, the Student Admission and Recruitment Committee strive to increase the selection and enrollment of dental students who are among the best and brightest.
Individual Faculty Member Responsibilities
Members of the Student Admission and Recruitment Committee are required to attend four meetings throughout the year. These meetings include a full-day session in November, as well as one- to two-hour meetings in January, February and June, respectively. In addition, committee members must commit to interviewing potential students for six ½ days between July and February each year. A schedule of interview dates and meeting dates for the upcoming year becomes available in May of each year.
Preparation time outside of meetings varies by committee member but may include review of applications in the Office of Admissions. Application essays are available online for committee members to review.
Time commitment: A minimum of 35-40 hours per year as described above.
