UF College of Dentistry Dean Isabel Garcia announced the appointment Nader Abdulhameed, B.D.S., M.S. M.Sc., Ph.D., to the role of Director of the Digital Dentistry Center effective October 11, a role previously held by Georgios Kouveliotis, D.D.S., C.D.T., M.Sc.
“The combination of his dental and engineering experience and background makes Dr. Abdulhameed uniquely qualified to lead our digital dentistry center as well as grow the center’s capabilities and expanding its integration into our DMD curriculum and patient care, as well as other areas of patient care,” Garcia said.
Abdulhameed joined the college in March 2023, bringing with him a strong educational background in prosthodontics and implant dentistry. In addition, he earned his master’s in materials science and engineering followed by a doctorate in materials science, both from the University of Florida. From 2015 to 2018, he taught operative dentistry and prosthodontics at UFCD, while also serving as an adjunct lecturer in the UF Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
Abdulhameed is teaching and supervising students as they learn and perfect techniques for digital design and manufacturing. As the director, he also is the primary administrator for the center, overseeing equipment maintenance, updates, calibration and clinical digital protocols. He is coordinating, along with the associate dean for Clinical Affairs and Quality, with department chairs and course directors to provide access to the digital equipment to enrich curriculum across the college’s educational programs.
“We are very proud of the college’s Digital Dentistry Center, which is currently the largest in any academic dental setting in the United States. I am confident that Dr. Abdulhameed is well positioned to leverage current technology in a way that benefits all learners so they’re ready to integrate various systems into patient care now and after they complete their dental and residency programs,” Garcia said.
