Shimaa Hathan, B.D.S., M.S., moved from resident to faculty at the UF College of Dentistry, effective July 1, where she’s now a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dental Sciences, Division of Operative Dentistry. In her new role on faculty, Hathan will focus on didactic, preclinical and clinical instruction for dental students, while also providing care for patients in the college’s Faculty Dental Practice.
Hathan completed UFCD’s three-year program in operative in esthetic dentistry this spring, consisting of a two-year master’s degree in dental sciences with her specialization in operative and esthetic dentistry, while also earning a certificate of completion in operative and esthetic dentistry.
Her postsecondary academic journey began at Virginia Commonwealth University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry in 2005. Hathan then earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from October University for Modern Sciences and Art in 6th of October, Egypt, in 2010, where she was the recipient of the Faculty Cup Award for graduating at the top of her dental school class.
She has a wide variety of experiences in dentistry, from volunteering, serving as a dental assistant early in her career, to a number of trainee and internship experiences both in the United States and in Egypt.
Hathan is a member of both the American and Florida Academies of Operative Dentistry, and serves as an instructor for several UF College of Dentistry Continuing Education courses, including ‘Expanded Functions for Dental Assistants’ and ‘Restorative Functions for Dental Assistants and Hygienists.’ She has a knack for digital dentistry with experience in several technologies including Planmeca/Romexis, Trios 3Shape, 3D printing, Exocad, CEREC Omnicam and CEREC Primescan.
While at UFCD, she’s served as a preclinical instructor for Dental Anatomy, Operative I, II and III and Treatment Planning within the Division of Operative Dentistry.
Hathan is continually educating herself on the latest and greatest in the field, with over 10 CE courses in the last two years in a variety of different subject matter areas in dentistry, like esthetics, case planning, 3D printing and digital workflow, traumatic injuries and more.
