Welcoming New Faculty: Marcio Ortegosa

Marcio Ortegosa, D.D.S., a 2024 graduate of the UF College of Dentistry’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at the Hialeah Dental Center is keeping it in the Gator family with a move from Miami to St. Pete, and from resident to clinical assistant professor in the Department of Community Dentistry and Behavioral Science at the college’s St. Petersburg Dental Center, effective June 3.

Ortegosa is now a team leader in St. Pete and is responsible for both didactic and clinical oversight within the AEGD program, serving as a leader and mentor for the college’s St. Petersburg residents and their progress towards competency and graduation.

He helps with patient-care management, seminars, case presentations and more, while also ensuring timely treatment of patients, quality assurance and an efficient clinical operation in collaboration with the team in St. Pete.

Ortegosa is a Brazilian-trained dentist and is board-certified in Brazil through the National Dental Board in Dentistry for Patients with Special Needs.

He earned his dental degree in 2001 from Camilo Castelo Branco University in São Paulo and first went into private practice as an associate dentist in 2002. He completed two General Practice Residencies in hospital dentistry from 2004-06, including one through the Association for the Assistance of Disabled Children.

Ortegosa continued his dental education with post-graduate training in orthodontics at the Center for Studies, Training and Improvement in Dentistry from 2007-2010, and his academic career also began in 2007 at Hospital das Clinicas at the University of São Paulo in the Department of Dentistry as an assistant professor where he taught 30 residents each year, while also providing care, including to those patients with medical and intellectual disabilities, until 2018.

Ortegosa’s interest in special needs patients translated to developing several research projects relating to special needs patients and orthodontics during his time at Hospital das Clinicas.

With a special interest in public service, Ortegosa additionally served Brazil as a Lieutenant Dentist for the Brazilian Army for a year from 2009-10, and practiced public health dentistry as a dentist for São Paulo City Hall where he provided an array of general dentistry care for schools and underserved communities for two years from 2010-12.

Following his post as assistant professor at Hospital das Clinicas, he moved into his final position before coming to the Unites States at the Social Service of Commerce in São Paulo for two years as head of the Department of Orthodontics and Technical Assistant of Dentistry Management, where he developed and implemented orthodontics into the institution’s dental clinics and served as an advisor for the development of new locations.

In 2022, his journey in the U.S. started with UFCD’s two-year AEGD program for internationally-educated dentists.

Ortegosa served as chief resident of the Hialeah resident Class of 2024.
