In summer 2022, UFCD Interim Associate Dean for Research Valeria Gordan, D.D.S., M.S., MSCI was one of 10 college faculty to receive promotion and tenure, achieving the rare career accomplishment of Distinguished Professor at the University of Florida.
Distinguished Professor designation acknowledges an exceptional record of achievement in the areas of teaching, research, publication, and professional and public service recognized both nationally and internationally, placing faculty at the top of their discipline in at least one area, with a record of significant distinction in the other areas. As noted by UF and the Faculty Senate, the title of Distinguished Professor/Curator is a rare and special achievement.
As part of being selected as a Distinguished Professor, faculty participate in the Faculty Senate’s Distinguished Professor Lecture Series the following academic year.
Gordan served as the third lecture in the 2022-23 series on April 13 when she delivered her presentation, Bridging Research Results to Clinical Care Using the PBRN Model, at the Harrell Medical Education Building on the UF Academic Health Center campus. A celebratory reception followed for faculty, staff, colleagues, friends, family and supporters who were in attendance.
It was a wonderful presentation and an even better evening of celebration.
Gordan, who calls the Department of Restorative Dental Sciences home, was named the interim associate dean for research at UFCD in December 2020, and has continued to lead the college’s esteemed research enterprise while also serving as director of the South Atlantic Region of the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network, housed at the UF College of Dentistry. The region includes Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
Since 2000, UFCD has ranked in the top 10 for NIH funding, which is no small feat. This past year, the college ranked No. 6 in NIH funding among all U.S. dental schools.
Gordan was additionally the recipient of the Academy of Operative Dentistry’s Hollenback Memorial Prize last year, recognizing her distinguished research, leadership and substantial contributions toward the advancement of restorative dentistry.
