Guelmann receives AAPD Lewis A. Kay Excellence in Education Award

Kay Excellence in Education Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in recognition of his leadership in the dental profession, commitment to educating pediatric dental residents, contributions to society and to the profession of dentistry.

“I am truly honored to receive this award and share the recognition with my department and the entire college,” Guelmann said.

Guelmann, a professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, joined the UF College of Dentistry in August 1999 and has served as department chair since 2004. Guelmann earned his dental degree in 1984 from the Federal University of Parana in Brazil and then completed a residency in pediatric dentistry at the Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine-Hebrew University, in Jerusalem, Israel. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry in 2006 and was inducted as a member of their board of directors in 2019.

The Dr. Lewis A. Kay Excellence in Education Award was established in 2011 by Pediatric Dental Associates, Ltd. of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, to honor the director of the pediatric dental program determined to best exemplify the dedication and values set forth by Dr. Lewis A. Kay. The award includes the following criteria as determined by the selection committee:

  • The recipient must demonstrate outstanding leadership;
  • The recipient must be committed to educating pediatric dental residents to provide children with comprehensive quality oral health care;
  • The recipient must bring recognition to their program through their contributions to society and the profession of dentistry.
