Congratulations to Michelle Thomas, DMD Class of 2017, who was recently elected as the 2016 American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) National Student Representative. She has been a member of the UF Chapter of the AAWD since her first year in dental school. She served as treasurer on the UF AAWD executive board as is now serving as chapter president.
The UF Chapter of AAWD has been very active in recent years. They doubled their size in 2016 and also sent four representatives to the 2015 National AAWD Annual Meeting in Washington, DC; the first time UF representatives were in attendance at the meeting. Susan Nimmo, D.D.S., M.P.H., serves as faculty advisor for the UF chapter.
A recent AAWD newsletter includes an announcement about Thomas’ election and a feature about the UF AAWD Chapter. You can read it here.

The AAWD was founded in 1921 as a support organization for women dentists to share common interests and enjoy friendships and camaraderie. Eventually the organization adapted to changing needs and became a national network for employment opportunities and scientific exchange.
