The UF College of Dentistry class of 2010 traded their ubiquitous scrubs for cocktail attire and celebrated their impending graduation during the Annual Senior Banquet. The banquet, held at UF’s Emerson Alumni Hall on May 15, featured humor, awards, food, a custom-made cake and cotton candy and it all added up to a great evening.
Adrian Lovell served as the master of ceremonies. His quick wit set a tone for a fun evening where at times it seemed that everyone was a comedian. The program included awards from college departments, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Florida Dental Association, the Academy of Alumni and Friends and more.
The Alachua County Dental Association’s We Care Program that, in coordination with Santa Fe College, provides free dental care for indigent patients in the county recognized the many students who volunteered with the program and estimated that they helped provide more than $100,000 in dental care through their efforts.
The class also recognized the professors and staff at the college who enriched their experience in the DMD program and presented a class gift, a John Moran signed photograph, in honor of Frank Collins, DDS, a beloved long-time professor who passed away in March 2010 following 31 years on faculty.

Attendees gave a standing ovation in honor of Ron Watson, DDS, who recently retired after 27 years of service. Called “the father of the Team Program,” that revamped the DMD clinical education model in 2008, Watson is credited with creating the structure of the program and helping with its successful implementation.
After the awards, attendees were treated to the first screening of a “College of Dentistry Class of 2010 Digital Short” video that revealed previously hidden talents of some class members for rapping, singing and dancing and assured everyone that, if their dental career doesn’t work out, they have a backup plan.
Finally, what dental banquet is complete without floss? Fresh cotton candy was served as a surprise treat to cap off the evening. *
Congratulations to the class of 2010 student award winners:

*Cotton candy: Cotton candy (US) or candyfloss (UK) or fairy floss (Australian English) is a form of spun sugar. Machine-spun cotton candy was invented in 1897 by William Morrison and John C. Wharton and first introduced to a wide audience at the 1904 Worlds Fair as “Fairy Floss” with great success. Fairy floss was renamed to “cotton candy” in the 1920s. (Source: wikipedia)
