During the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) annual meeting in San Diego, Calif., Dr. Kevin Andrus, postgraduate resident in the department of Endodontics, received a $1,000 award for his research presentation, A Quantitative Analysis of Inflammatory Mediators Utilizing LINCOplex™ on Inflamed Pulpal Tissues.

Also during the AAE meeting, Roberta Pileggi, D.D.S., M.S., associate professor and chair of the department of endodontics, received her Diplomate status award from the American Board of Endodontics, which is the certifying board for the specialty.

Pileggi received her D.D.S. degree at University Paulista in Brazil. She completed both her masters degree and Certificate in Endodontics at the University of Maryland College of Dental Surgery.

In 2005, she completed a fellowship in education at Baylor College of Medicine and University of Texas at Houston. Dr. Pileggi has received numerous faculty awards including the Edward Osetek Award given by the American Association of Endodontists.

In related news, Uma P. Nair, D.M.D., M.D.S., and Claudio Varella, D.D.S., are two of the 23 new Diplomates nationally who completed and passed board certification on April 12 and 13, 2010, following many years of hard work and a deep commitment to professional excellence.

Nair received her D.M.D. degree at the University of Pittsburgh. She completed her masters degree in India and Certificate in Endodontics at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research interests include tissue engineering and 3D imaging of vertical root fractures.

Varella received his D.D.S. degree at Unigranrio Rio de Janeiro. He completed both his masters degree and Certificate in Endodontics at the University of Michigan. His research interests include laser and pulp biology, specifically pulp reactions to caries and dental procedures

Founded in 1956, the ABE is the only certifying board for the specialty of endodontics and is one of the nine specialty boards recognized by the American Dental Association. The ABE is sponsored by the American Association of Endodontists.
