On Wednesday, March 4, Boyd Robinson, DMD, associate dean for clinical affairs, went bald for a cause: The American Cancer Society’s Annual Relay for Life to be held on March 27. Robinson was the first of a list of University of Florida College of Dentistry faculty and students who are in line to shave their heads for a price.

The price? It depends on the head. Led by two DMD students, Cassandra Dorsey and Telka Jackson, class of 2011, a group of dentistry faculty, staff and students are working together to raise $50,000. Some have volunteered to shave their heads when these specific goals are met:

$5,000 – Cory Canavan, Dave Cardman and Shawn Willis (all three are DMD students)
$10,000 – Dr. Boyd Robinson
$15,000 – Telka Jackson, team captain
$20,000 – Dr. Marc Ottenga
$25,000 – Dr. Ronald Watson
$30,000 – Dr. Frank Catalanotto
$35,000 – Cassandra Dorsey, team captain
$40,000 – Dr. Marc Gale
$45,000 – Censeri Abare
$50,000 – Dr. Robert Primosch and Lorie Primosch
$55,000 – Gail Mitchell

Since Robinson will be out of town during the Relay for Life event, when the rest of the heads will be ceremonially shaved, he volunteered to get an early solo shave to help promote the event and spread the word.

And it worked. TV20 came by, filmed the inaugural shave and it was the “kicker” on that evening’s 6pm news.

You can help the team reach its goal by donating, joining the relay team to walk or run during the event, or by just helping spread the word and raise money.
