UF College of Dentistry clinical anaplastologist Robert Mann touches up
the color of 5-year-old Jorden Flowers’ prosthetic ears. Jorden, the
son of Olympic bobsled champion Vonetta Flowers, was born without ear
canals, hearing nerves and his outer ears were incompletely formed skin
tabs. His new prosthetic ears created at UFCD are attached using
magnets that clip to metal posts implanted in his head by surgeon J.
Scott Hill, of Children’s Hospital of Alabama. Click here to see the full story. |
News from the College of Dentistry!
Welcome
to the Academy of Alumni & Friends E-NEWS, your quick and
convenient connection to the University of Florida College of
Dentistry. E-NEWS arrives electronically packed with news about the
college and your fellow UFCD alumni and friends. Send us an e-mail to let us know what you think; your feedback is important to us.
Message from the President of the Academy of Alumni & Friends
Having
the opportunity to speak at the White Coat Ceremony on July 14 was an
absolute thrill! I was impressed by the students’ presentations and
display of leadership skills. It also was wonderful shaking hands with
the Class of 2009 and discussing my experiences as a dental student
from 35 years ago. Ah… the memories!
As
this year’s president of the Academy of Alumni & Friends, it is my
pleasure to oversee the annual giving campaign for the 2007-2008 Alumni
Affairs and Student Activities Fund. We are three months into our
annual giving and have collected almost half of our goal of $100,000. Please continue to give. Your contributions benefit the students, and we want their experiences at UFCD to be the very best.
Additionally, Dental Fall Weekend is quickly approaching. Please plan
to join us for a very interesting speaker on practice management –
Linda Miles. We can all use some help in this area, as a well-run
practice contributes to the delivery of excellent dentistry. On another
note, that weekend’s football game against Florida Atlantic may prove
to be exciting as well! Florida Atlantic recently gave USF a hard time,
and USF is currently ranked higher than the Gators in the polls!
I look forward to seeing you in Gainesville on Nov. 15-17 for learning, schmoozing and football!
Go Gators!

pediatric dental facility in Collier County. Groundbreaking for the
clinical facility will take place Oct. 30. The gift was announced last
December by trustees for the Naples Children & Education
Foundation, and represents a unique public-private partnership between

Gift of $2 million from grateful patient brings all smiles to UF College of Dentistry
Longwood, Fla. entrepreneur, Edward T. Quinn, has made a $2 million
gift to the University of Florida College of Dentistry in honor of M.
Franklin Dolwick, a UF professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
 |
| Dr. M. Franklin Dolwick |
The gift will create the M. Franklin Dolwick University Chair and is
eligible to receive dollar-for-dollar matching funds from the State of
Florida Trust Fund for Major Gifts. The permanently endowed chair is
the largest ever established within the college, and is one of a
handful funded at this level university-wide.
"Dr. Dolwick has dedicated his life to this profession and to his
patients," Quinn said. "I was his patient also, and how he treated
me, and all of his patients, became the driving force behind my desire
to honor him in this way. It is important to me."
The M. Franklin Dolwick University Chair will support a permanent
faculty position held by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, appointed
by the dean of the College of Dentistry, with an academic rank of
associate or full professor.
M. Franklin Dolwick is a pioneering surgeon in the development of
temporomandibular joint diagnostic and surgical procedures. His
research on TMJ disorders garnered the prestigious Research Recognition
Award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
in 1993. Dolwick is internationally recognized as an outstanding
educator, scientist and clinician. The gift honors his 35-year career
as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, 22 years of which have been
invested in resident education and patient care at the University of
Florida.
"I am honored but at the same time humbled by Mr. Quinn’s
generosity," said Dolwick. "His gift will assure oral and
maxillofacial surgery at the University of Florida remains a leader in
resident education and patient care."
