NEW course Periodontology Continuum for the General Practitioner

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This will be an intense course in Clinical Periodontology for the general practitioner looking to update his/her knowledge of Clinical Periodontology and implant therapy. Three weekend sessions are offered over a three month period. There will be clinical hands-on sessions to teach root planing and simple periodontal surgical flap procedures for restorative needs.

SESSION 1 - March 7-8, 2008

  • Introduction to Periodontal Diseases-Lectures: Examination, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning for the periodontal patient. Risk Factors in Periodontal Disease, Perio-Systemic health connections.
  • Discussion session- Bring radiographs, periodontal charts, models or other diagnostic information from patients in your office for group discussion on diagnosis and treatment planning.

SESSION 2 - April 11-12, 2008

  • Initial, Cause-related Therapy-Lectures: scaling & root planing, use of antimicrobial agents. Assessing Tissue Response to Initial therapy & Rationale for Periodontal Surgery. When to treat in the Generalist Office and when to Refer.
  • Clinical Session- Scaling and Root Planing for the Periodontal Patient. Other aspects of initial therapy.

SESSION 3 - May 9-10, 2008

  • Periodontal Surgery –Lectures: Flap Procedures, Osseous Procedures incl. crown lengthening, Muco-gingival procedures and Guided Tissue Regeneration.
  • Clinical Session: Observe and assist in performing simple periodontal flap procedure-access for root planing.
  • Implant Therapy-Lectures: when do you save teeth versus extracting and replacing them with implants? Treatment planning for the implant patient, Procedures for Implant Therapy and Maintenance Care/Supportive Periodontal Therapy.

FACULTY:

  • Ikramuddin Aukhil, B.D.S., M.S., Professor & Chairman, Department of Periodontology, University of Florida College of Dentistry. Dr. Aukhil is an active member of many professional organizations, has published and presented extensively, and is engaged in private practice limited to Periodontology & Implants in the Faculty Practice at the University of Florida College of Dentistry.
