Yilmaz to serve on NIH Study Section
Özlem Yilmaz, D.D.S., Ph.D., was invited to serve as a member of the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review Oral, Dental and Craniofacial Sciences Study Section. She will begin a six-year term in July 2013.
Study sections review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on the applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science.

Yilmaz is an associate professor of periodontology and oral biology at the University of Florida. She also serves as an affiliated member of the Emerging Pathogens Institute, where her research laboratory is located. She joined UF as an assistant professor in February 2006 from the University of Washington, School of Public Health and Community Medicine. She earned her D.D.S. degree from Istanbul University and a Ph.D. in oral biology from the University of Washington specializing in mechanisms of chronic oral infections and inflammation in the oral mucosa.
Her responsibilities include didactic teaching in pre-doctoral and residency level dental classes, clinical teaching in periodontology, mentoring of undergraduate, dental and graduate students, as well as junior faculty and post-doctoral fellows. She has received continued federal funding from multiple NIH grants since 2001. She had earned several professional honors including NIH-Clinical Scientist Award (K08), Warren G. Magnuson Institute for Excellence in Biomedical Research Training, member of NIH/NIDCR Special (Career) Grants Review Committee, and she has also served in NIH Dental-related SBIR/STTR review panel, National Institute of General Medical Sciences Reviewer for Scientific conference grants, and member of AADR E. H. Hatton Fellowship Committee.
Yilmaz has been an associate editor and editorial board member of several premier scientific journals including Molecular Oral Microbiology and PLOS ONE. She has authored many research papers as well as book chapters by publishers such as American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and Cambridge University Press. She is a recent recipient of the UF Open Access Publication Award. Her research was featured in a variety of journals including Nature of Microbiological Reviews, JADA. She has been invited to speak at numerous symposia by government, national and international professional organizations such as NIH / NIDCR, ASM, International Association for Dental Research (IADR), American Cancer Biology Society, and International Organization for the Study of Periodontal Disease (ARPA) foundation.
