Koutouzis wins international competition

Theofilos Koutouzis, D.D.S., M.S.Congratulations to Theofilos Koutouzis, D.D.S., M.S., for winning the Basic Science Research Competition at the Astra World Congress in Gothenburg, Sweden, on May 12, 2012.

Koutouzis, an assistant professor in the University of Florida Department of Periodontology, received the award for his research project, “Innate Immune Receptor Expression in Periodontitis Susceptible and Non-Susceptible Implant Recipients.” He was one of eight researchers selected to give an oral presentation out of more than 100 abstracts submitted for the competition by researchers from across the globe.  The award comes with a cash prize of $2,100 and, according to eyewitness reports, accepted his award onstage accompanied by the sounds of French horns heralding his win!

Koutouzis graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, with a D.D.S. He completed a residency and a M.Sc. in Periodontology at Sahlgrenska Academy at Goteborg University, Sweden. He joined the UF College of Dentistry in 2006 as a visiting assistant professor and in January 2007 as an assistant professor in the Department of Periodontology.
